The department of Botany of our
college undertook the first fieldwork of the academic year 2016-17 form 12th
June to 17th June, under the guidance of Dr. ESK Udupa and
assistance of the forest department. The study area was Kudremukh national park
range. The team consisted of 3 members from the teaching staff and 11 students.
The purpose of the work was to study the effects of forest fires on the grassland-dominating
shola forests of the region. A total of
18 transects were laid on the different hills of the range, each of 500m
length.
As it was the onset of pre-monsoon, the misty shola forest was not just swampy but leach-laden as well! The daily schedule was to wake up early in the morning, have breakfast and leave the ‘Bhagavathi nature camp’ for exploring the beautiful mist-covered hills… an average of 4 transects were laid per day…. The work was also interrupted now and then by drizzles!
The fieldwork was another wonderful opportunity for the students of BZC to explore the beautiful shola forests of the Kudremukh National Park range of western ghats…
